New York New Jersey Rail (NYNJ) is considered a Short Line Marine Railroad, established in 2005 with the acquisition of the New York Cross Harbor Railroad. The New York Cross Harbor Railroad was formed in 1983, derived from the Brooklyn East District Terminal Railroad, the Bush Terminal Railroad, and the New York Dock railroads. All played a part in the rich history of industrial railroading and car float services along New York Harbor. In 2008, New York New Jersey Rail became a wholly owned unit of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, continuing over one hundred years of marine railroading in the region.
The railroad is strategically located in the heart of the New York Metropolitan market, at Jersey City, NJ and Brooklyn, NY.
MARINE BARGE “BRIDGE” SERVICE:
NYNJ Rail is unique as it provides the only remaining car float barge service on New York Harbor, connecting ConRail and it’s parents CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern in New Jersey with the New York & Atlantic Railway, and the South Brooklyn Railway (New York City Transit Authority) in New York. The four and a half mile, forty five minute, nautical journey is made several times per day, Monday through Friday.
NYNJ owns and operates two rail barges each consisting of 4 tracks with an 18 car capacity. These barges were constructed by the Metal Trades Corporation in 2017.
